THE INSIDER
Everyone always wonders what Neil, our Abuse Manager, does for a
living. Does he walk around the office browbeating Tripodians? No,
though sometimes I'm sure he'd like to. His job is a bit of frazzler.
He deals with violators of our Terms of Service agreement. Neil is
our resident expert on porn, copyright laws, and evil hate sites;
not by choice, by profession. These days, he's an expert on the
Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). In this week's staff
meeting, Neil enlightened us with a most informative presentation on the
COPPA. It's a significant piece of Internet legislature that will have a
huge effect on the Web within the next six weeks, by which time all
public companies need to comply with its regulations. With Neil on our
team, we're on top of it!
Last Friday night was a big one for Jenny. A group of Tripodians
held a surprise birthday party for her at the local lanes. What a
surprise it was! They came from near and far — even Colleen came up
from Boston for the festivities! And let me tell you, Jenny bowled
some amazing games. I was on the lane next to her, and I saw her
knock down more than a few strikes. I think her best game was a 164.
Yeah, you heard me — 164. That girl sure knows how to bowl.
A little situation arose this week when the editorial group was
researching this week's Super Member Sites. One of the sites was
created by a young woman who chronicled, in words and pictures, her
life and family. She also wrote extensively about her one and only
love — her boyfriend. We decided to check out his Web site in the
process and found that it said lots of nasty things about his
girlfriend — in a tone so very different from that on her site. After
further investigation, it was confirmed that her boyfriend's site had
been hacked, and that they're still very much in love. And you thought
happy endings only happened in the movies.
