THE INSIDER
News and gossip from the Guru
I should not be writing this. I should be finishing my holiday shopping.
OK, that’s not quite true. I should be STARTING my holiday shopping. Now
that the "shopping days" have dwindled to minutes, I have no time for
luxuries like writing, or eating, or sleeping. I need to be actively
acquiring tokens of affection for my ever-expanding inner circle of
family, friends, and lawyers. I swear it’s some sort of pyramid scheme!
While it’s tough to find perfect gifts for the supposed adults on my list,
buying stuff for kids is easy. I start by ignoring the hot toys of the
season (scooters, yapping robotic dogs, impossible to find PlayStation 2).
Instead, I wait for the annual "12 Worst Toys" list. You see, the stores
can’t unload these politically incorrect goodies and the kids just love
‘em. Imagine the look of wonder on the faces of the little ones when they
unwrap their very own "Wolverine Battlin’ Bop Bag." Ho, ho, whack!
Need more help attaining the proper seasonal glow? Check our spirited site
builders. Kwanzaa Celebration features sample
cards and gift suggestions, plus words and symbols associated with the
African-American celebration. Finally, no virtual sleigh ride is
complete without a stop at Santaville, where you can e-mail the big guy,
play reindeer games and check the weather at the North Pole.
OK, gotta go . . . time to hunt and gather a pair of fuzzy pink slippers.

MEMBERSHIP QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Get the inside dirt on some of the questions most frequently fielded
by our dedicated membership department!
Q: How should I manage my files?
A: The best advice we can give on file management is to make backups of
everything in your Tripod directory. It is incredibly easy to delete a
file or make an unfortunate edit. You can accidentally ruin days of good
work in just a few seconds. Bad server connections can do the same. It’s
a good idea to learn how to use an FTP client and regularly back up your
work on your home computer.
Another good strategy for managing your files is to use subdirectories.
Keep your page files (.html and .htm) in the root directory and name them
in a way that allows you to easily remember what’s on each page. Create
separate directories for images, sound files, downloadable files (if you
have them), and miscellaneous files like text files or documents. Keep
all Perl modules and scripts in your cgi-bin, along with the HTML and
text files used by these scripts.
