THE INSIDER
News and gossip from the Guru

For weeks now, Team Tripod has eagerly awaited the arrival of spring. We put away our snow shovels. We practiced driving around with our windows down. But the gods were not amused. To remind us that there's more to this season than tulips and short pants, the skies opened and we were treated to 24 hours of rain that made The Perfect Storm look like a passing shower. Streets flooded. Potholes were upgraded to ponds. Kayak sales skyrocketed. What did we learn? Two things: 1) Never rush Mother Nature. 2) A cheap sump pump is no bargain.

What do you do when you're knee deep in mud and the five day forecast calls for hip boots and bailing? Take your laptop up on the roof and let a few Tripod site builders help plan your next vacation. Feel the sand under your feet in Laguna Beach. Try your luck in the casinos of Nevada. Or skip the blackouts and blackjack and head for the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. But no matter where you go, send us a tacky postcard. That way, we can all pretend to be having fun in the sun. Heck, I think I'll wade out to the mailbox and wait . . .

Animated GIFs get bad press. Mention the subject and most people think of banner ads, spinning globes, or worse yet, these annoying mailboxes with a door that opens and shuts, opens and shuts . . . Making an animated GIF is easy. Making one that's cool, can be tricky. Webmonkey can show you the moves.

MEMBERSHIP QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Get the inside dirt on some of the questions most frequently fielded by our dedicated membership department!

Q: How should I name my files?

A: It's good practice to use short, easy-to-remember file names that describe the file. A file called "page4.html" is not terribly descriptive, and a file named "bobs_page_about_chicken_feet.html" is just too long. Name the file concisely. (For example, Bob could use "chickfeet.html" as his file name.) You'll want to keep file names short, because the longer they are, the more difficultit becomes to link to them correctly.

You'll also want to avoid mixing case in your file names for the same reason. A file called "ChICKfeeT.html" will frustrate people trying to link to it or even type it into a browser. If you keep your file names lowercase, you'll avoid all sorts of potential problems. If you upload files using Tripod's FileManager, you'll notice the "make lowercase" option. Check this when you upload, and your case-sensitivity problems will be a thing of the past.
