News and gossip from the Guru
What's in a name? Pretty much everything. Long before a new product
ever makes its debut, a gaggle of marketing and advertising types spend
countless hours (three-martini lunches) strategizing to ensure that the
new wonder thing's moniker has maximum appeal. This is a good lesson to
apply to site building. Ideally, the name of a site should be short and
memorable. And to really tie everything together, the Web address should
match the name. Sure, Tripod does a good job at keeping your URL from
being a mile long. But you can go one step better. Register your own
domain! By picking your own URL (www.mysite.com), you can have an easy
to remember URL that matches your site. And because the domain is yours,
all-yours, it only changes when you want it to. Sound good? Let our
friends at Lycos Domains help you make a name for yourself!

Turn on the radio and you'd think there was only one type of music. A sugary brand of pop aimed at the post-Barbie set. But there's another world of sound out there. You just need to know where to look and listen. A good place to start is the Hip Surgery Encyclopedia of Sound. Consider it your online guide to unusual music, fringe artists, and way-out sounds.

Napster nostalgia? While the former "file trading" champ has been
litigated into dust, there was a time when music fans had free reign
to "share" all the files their hard drives could hold. Then the record
companies and a few artists (hello, Lars!) put up a fight. Still, it's
hard to put FREE back in the bottle, so a bunch of clones have popped
up. Which one serves the best free lunch? Webmonkey runs it down.

Q: How should I name my files?
File names are more important than they might seem. It's good practice
to use short, easy-to-remember file names that describe the content.
A file called "page4.html" is not terribly descriptive, and a file named
"bobs_page_about_chicken_feet.html" is just too long. Name your files
concisely. (Bob could use "chickfeet.html" as his file name.)
You'll also want to avoid mixing case in your file names. A file called
"ChICKfeeT.html" will frustrate people trying to link to it or even type
it into their browser. Keep your file names lowercase to avoid potential
problems. If you upload files using Tripod's FileManager, you'll notice
the "make lowercase" option. Check this option when uploading, and your
case-sensitivity problems will be a thing of the past.
