Frequently Asked Questions about Tripod CGI

How can I put scripts into my Tripod cgi-bin?
There are three ways to get scripts into your Tripod cgi-bin. First, you can use the Homepage Studio's Script Editor to write your own scripts from scratch. Second, you can upload scripts -- just as you would any other file -- using the Filemanager. Finally, you can upload scripts using a stand-alone FTP program.

Where can I access my scripts once they're on my directory?
You can access your scripts at three different URLs:

http://membername.tripod.com/cgi-bin/script-name
http://members.tripod.com/membername/cgi-bin/script-name
http://cgi.tripod.com/membername/cgi-bin/script-name

What header should I put on my Perl scripts?
To get Perl scripts to run on other servers, you generally need to tell the script where Perl is located on the server. (The code looks something like this: #!/usr/local/bin/perl.) On Tripod, you don't need to worry about putting a header on your Perl scripts, because our CGI server takes care of those details.

I need to chmod my files to get them to work correctly. How do I do this?
Chmoding your files is another thing you don't need to worry about on Tripod. Our server takes care of changing the permissions on files so that they work correctly. Besides, you wouldn't be able to chmod your files even if you wanted to, because of the way our CGI server works.

What is the root directory for my scripts?
The root directory for your scripts is your cgi-bin itself; if you need to fill in the root directory, it is simply "/".

I want my script to alter an HTML file. What's the absolute location of HTML files on my Tripod directory?
Any HTML file you want your scripts to alter must be in your cgi-bin. The absolute location of the HTML files would then be the root directory, just like the absolute location of your scripts. The URL of an HTML file in your cgi-bin would be: http://cgi.tripod.com/membername/cgi-bin/html_file.html. You would have to reference it using the cgi.tripod.com URL, not the normal URL you use for HTML files on your Tripod directory.
