 FRONTPAGE GUIDE

What is FrontPage?
Microsoft FrontPage is a software product that allows you to create and maintain your web site, even if you don't know any HTML. It allows you to design your web site on your local computer and then publish it to your Tripod web space. Other FrontPage components allow you to add text searches, personal conferences, and much more.

Which versions of FrontPage does Tripod support?
Currently Tripod supports FrontPage 2000/2002/2003, Office 2000 and Office XP. Unfortunately, we do not support versions prior to FrontPage 2000.

Is my Tripod account already enabled for FrontPage?
Yes, when you sign up for your account, we activate the necessary file extensions on your Tripod account to use FrontPage or related Microsoft products. You should configure your Microsoft product to publish to the following URL:

http://frontpage.tripod.com/yourmembername/
(be sure to include the slash at the end)

Can I disable the FrontPage extensions?
Yes. To disable FrontPage extensions, navigate to the "My Account" page. Near the bottom of the page, there's an enable/disable link. After disabling FrontPage, you can safely delete all of the files and directories added by FrontPage.

When I look at my File Manager, I see several directories named "_vti_something." What are those?
These are the files and directories that FrontPage adds to your member directory. Do not delete these directories. If you delete the FrontPage _vti_ directories, FrontPage will not work.

Which FrontPage features are implemented?
Almost all of them. We have disabled the ability to set browsing and viewing permissions through FrontPage. Only you are allowed to administer your Web site and anyone can browse it, unless you make your FrontPage directories private through the Filemanager (Remember also that two features — Scrolling Marquee and Hovering Text — will only work on an Internet Explorer browser, version 3 or higher). In addition, Tripod does not yet support subwebs.

Will my URL change?
No.

Can I still use Tripod's FreeForm Editor?
Certainly. All HTML files created by FrontPage can be edited with the Freeform Editor. You will not be able to easily edit the FrontPage components with FreeForm Editor — just the standard HTML.

How do I get access to my FrontPage-based site once I've uploaded it to Tripod?
Your FrontPage-based site can be accessed at http://membername.tripod.com.

Who should I go to for support? Tripod or Microsoft?
For problems using FrontPage on your own computer, contact Microsoft. For problems publishing your pages to Tripod, or if something doesn't work correctly on Tripod, contact our membership services department right here

What about FrontPage Express and Web Publishing Wizard (free products available with IE5 and IE6)?
Pages created with FrontPage Express should work fine. If you use the Web Publishing Wizard, upload your pages via FTP, not FrontPage.

Where can I buy FrontPage?
How about right here:
