MOVE TO TRIPOD

" . . . Tripod is the best place to build and host your Web site."CNET

Is your current homepage service not treating you right? we have the solution. Move your site to Tripod! It's as easy as one-two-three.

1. Sign up for a Tripod account.
2. Move your files to Tripod. There are several ways to do this, detailed below.
3. E-mail your friends and tell them your new URL. We've got a handy tool for this!

To help you decide, we've put together a FAQ that covers many of the common questions we receive from our members.

Why should I choose Tripod?
How do I sign up?
What is my new address?
How do I move my files to Tripod?
How do I tell friends about my new address?

Q. Why should I choose Tripod?
It all comes down to choice. If you're just starting out and don't mind ads on your site, our Tripod Free service is a great intro to site building. If you want the freedom to build without banner ads or other restrictions, Tripod Plus is your plan. Learn more!

Q. How do I sign up?
Just click here and follow the easy instructions. Once you choose a username and password, you'll be a Tripod member. And since Tripod is part of the Lycos Network, you'll have access to cool stuff like Gamesville.com, HTML Gear, Lycos Mail, and much more.
Q. What is my new address?
Glad you asked. One benefit of moving to Tripod is that we offer our members shorter Web addresses. Instead of an endless string of nonsense, you'll have an easy to remember URL like this: http://membername.tripod.com
Q. How do I move my files and my old site?
FTP Users: Easy as pie. Simply log on to your old server with your FTP program and download all the files on your site (including any subdirectories and the files within them) to your hard drive. Then log on to Tripod's FTP server and upload the files to the new location.

Non-FTP Users: Almost as easy, but it takes a bit longer. If you have your files backed up on your computer's hard drive, you're halfway there. If not, you need to download all the files to your hard drive. Here are two methods:
Method 1: Method 1: Create a folder called "Site Backup" on your hard drive. Then choose "Save As" from the "File" menu of your Web browser, for every page on your site, and save them to your "Site Backup" folder. Note: IE will save your HTML and image files. Netscape users must download image files by right-clicking on each image.
Method 2: Download a program like Website Extractor, Sitesucker, or Websnatcher that lets you save your entire site to your hard drive in one step.

Once you've downloaded all your files, log-in to Tripod and use File Manager to upload your files. You can upload up to eight files at a time.

IMPORTANT: If you don't use FTP, you will need to remove your previous site hosting service's ad banner code from your HTML files. No matter which method you choose, you may need to adjust your links and image tags to properly reference your new address. We recommend you make all changes to your HTML files before you upload the pages to Tripod.

Q. I'm afraid of FTP! Can you help me?
IF you want to take the plunge and learn FTP (you'll be glad you did!), FTPplanet has created a great tutorial for Tripod members. Tripod also has a Guide to Moving Your Site that will give you tips on transferring files.
Q. How do I tell my friends about my new site address? Look next to the ad banner on your site for the "e-mail this page" button. Click it and you can enter the e-mail addresses of your friends and send them your new URL. You can even add a message ("Tripod is great! Wish you were here! OK, just a suggestion.) Visitors to your site can also use this feature to tell their friends about your cool site.

Thanks, we hope to see you soon!
